We'd like to feature our junior members by
sharing some of their letters. I think you
will agree, their enthusiasm is quite
contagious. Here are just a few, from the 2nd
Annual Youth Membership Contest.

Hi there, My name is Meagan Roberts.
I'm nine years old, and I fly with the Stilly
Racing Pigeon Club in Washington State.
I have been racing for two years and have
about 70 pigeons, but I've been around the
Pigeon Racing Sport for my whole life.
This year my old birds got cut down by the
hawks. I also had a peregrine come in, but
didn't get after any of the pigeons that time.
All of my birds and 3 of my dad's birds are
my favorites because they're friendly to me.
I like to help out with shipping by doing the
countermarking and putting birds in crates, But
the best thing I like to do is beating my
parents in the races.
Signed: Meagan

Dear AU,
I am sending my letter and two of my photos for
your 2nd Annual Youth Membership Contest.
I started flying pigeons in the year of 1997.
My building is 12' x 12" with 30 double
nesting boxes and 36 perches.
My stall traps really help me on race day for
clocking. I've received one
"1st-Place" and four "2nd-
place". Two of them I lost by 4 seconds and
the others by 5 seconds.
In 1999 I entered the AU Junior race at
Baltimore, Maryland and was present for
clocking. The one picture [not shown] of the
birds that I'm holding won first on the Atlanta,
Georgia 600 mile race.

Hello, my name is Yesenia Reyes.
I am 16 years old and a Junior member in the
Pomona Club, this is my 1st season flying.
I already won 4 first place and a couple of
second and third place. I am very proud of my
race team because I always keep my loft clean
and keep them in good condition
My loft is not that big. It is 8' by 6', and
I fly natural straight to the perch and believe
that this hobby is the #1 sport in the whole
world, because it helps keep me and other
teenagers out of trouble and drugs.
I hope we get more people involved in this
sport. Thank you. Yours in the sport.
Signed: Yesenia Reyes

Dear AU, My name is Steven Freitag.
I'm eight years old, and have been raising
pigeons all my life. When I was only two years
old, I could be found in the coop picking up a
baby bird from the nest and throwing it while
yelling "fly, fly", But Soon I learned
better. I have been a member of the North Valley
Combine for 3 years and I have participated in
the AU Youth Race all three years. One year I
placed 13th and it was great. Last year I tried
to win a bird from your AU contest. I show my
pigeons every year at McHenry County Fair, and
hand out the pamphlets to all the people.
I have a bird going to Buenos Aires,
Argentina an I'm representing my combine.
Thank you. Signed: Steven

Dear AU, I am a fourteen year old, and have
been a member of the North Valley Combine for
more than six years. I've taken part in the AU
Youth race since it was started. My birds have
never placed though, but I'll keep trying.
With the North Valley combine I have been in
average speed for 2 years now. I have a few
trophies and a lot of diplomas to my name. I
also show my birds in the McHenry County Fair.
While I am there, I pass out pamphlets to a
few hundred people. I have done many reports
for school on pigeons, and my friends have
learned many things about pigeons from me. I
am sending a bird to Buenos Aires, Argentina
and representing my combine. Thank you.
Signed: Brian Freitag

There are so many great letters coming in
from our AU youth members we cannot possibly
feature all of them at once, but please keep
them coming. We love to hear your stories and
ideas, and you never know when yours may be the
one that appears here next.
Thank You !.... AU
