It is a busy time in the Lakes Zone. Old bird
race season is just around the corner and everyone
is busy trying to get their birds in condition for
the first race. It is not always an easy
proposition. As I write this they are calling for
lows near 20 degrees with snow. Two days ago the
high was 80 degrees. Typical Midwest spring weather.
Meanwhile we are also raising those future champions
for young bird season and the out-of-area
futurities. It is an exciting time and everyone is
full of optimism.
Although we are all extremely busy, we still need
to devote as much time as we can spare to sports
promotion. I’m sure many of you remember reading
“Pigeon City” by Dr. Leon C. Whitney as a
youngster. The Racing Pigeon Digest has republished
this Literacy Guild Award winner and is making it
available at a very reasonable cost. My club
recently purchased six books for distribution to the
Fairfield County District Library and its branches.
We are also doing a presentation at the library
about homing pigeons that will tie in with the book.
During the month of May the Lancaster Pigeon Club
will release birds for the opening of the Special
Olympics in Amanda, Ohio and we will also release
birds at a Memorial Day ceremony.
In July my club participates in the Lancaster
Festival Fair Day at the Fairfield County
Fairgrounds. We take some of our more colorful
birds, along with old bands, magazines, diplomas,
clocks, etc. We let the kids pet the birds, answer
questions, and release birds at a predetermined
time. In past years we have participated in parades,
releasing birds along the route. At each of these
events we make sure we have AU flyers on hand for
distribution.
I hope each of your clubs will consider
participating in some sports promotion events in
your area. If you need any help or ideas, please
contact Deone Roberts at the AU Office in Oklahoma
City. She has a ton of wonderful ideas and would
love to help you with your presentation or event.
Finally, I want to encourage everyone to attend
the AU Convention in Detroit this fall and send in
your best birds for the AU Race.
