HOME SCHOOL ADDS TO CURRICULUM
Home school groups are seeking ways to expand the education experience. One group in Oklahoma specifically
sought information on Homing Pigeons from the American Racing Pigeon Union. They had a desire to let
the children know about the amazing abilities of the birds and what is required in keeping them.
Greg Sherrick, a member of the Sooner Racing Pigeon Club, in Oklahoma City, presented racing homing
pigeons to a co-op home school group in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. Students first listened to a short video.
Then Greg treated them to a story about his own pigeons and fielded the students' and parents' questions.
They asked excellent questions and even did a little research prior to the scheduled presentation.
This particular group will broadcast what they have learned so that other similar groups may have the
same opportunity. The children and the parents are eager to learn more about the birds and the racing
sport.
Greg left behind some extra informational brochures to pass around to the co-op members. The group
will also be posting Homing Pigeon events in their electronic newsletter.
This is a wonderful way to have a positive influence in a child's life. It can spark a new hobby interest
in parents or a pigeon project for the students. With a pigeon project, the child can develop self-esteem
through attention to detail, responsibility, goal setting, decision making, expressing ideas, getting
along with people, and practicing leadership, initiative, self-reliance, cooperation and sportsmanship.
One of the parents at the presentation said, "It's an answer to a prayer." It is a great reminder to
never underestimate the power of the pigeon - the power to learn - the power to grow. Pass it on.
