FAMOUS ZOO Includes Homing Pigeons
At the World-Famous San Diego Zoo, you will see some of the world's most rare wildlife, unique habitats and lush gardens. A new and interesting addition to this collection has been the pigeon loft exhibit.
Zoo visitors have the unique opportunity to view all-white homing pigeons in their living quarters and become familiar with their amazing homing abilities.
The gentleman responsible for this clever zoo addition is AU member, Mike McConnell. Having been an avid racer for 35 years, and a zoo employee for over 33 years, he decided the two could be combined to provide entertainment and education.
Mike suggested the loft to zoo administration over a year ago. He started the loft around Christmas time last year and has all young birds occupying the loft at present He began with 4 pair and raised 11 pair of youngsters from them. He has since returned the original 4 pair. During this time, he kept thorough records on the babies. The birds are housed in an 8' X 12' loft with a goal of 35 birds on each side.
The zoo is able to incorporate the pigeons in a stage show with Dr. Zoolittle. Dr. Zoolittle explains some basics to the children and invites them up on the stage to help him let birds go. The children have loved the chance to touch the birds. The birds fly around the zoo about an hour and land while the audience admires them. This is all finished by their 4:00 p.m. feeding time.
Mike plans to include video viewing and graphics to enhance the exhibit. American Racing Pigeon Union will provide informational brochures to add to the exhibit. Visitors will be able to personally enjoy the birds and receive an education in the process. The zoo also did a write up on the birds and Mike in the August issue of their monthly magazine, "ZooNooz.".
Not only did Mike have a great idea for the zoo, but he also helps others starting out in the racing sport. One such person is Dan George. Many positive things have come out of San Diego and fanciers such as Dan. Dan conducts charity events utilizing the birds and together they have helped raise thousands of dollars for the Seeing Eye Dog program. He and his birds have also been involved in events that benefit organizations
such as St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Mike and Dan truly enjoy sharing the love of their sport. They work together to present positive information about their birds. You can see Dan's
handy work in the photos in this article.
It is Mike and Dan's hope that other zoos will follow suit and bring a fascinating and educational exhibit such as this to their facilities. Nice job guys !

When the birds are not out flying, visitors can view the birds in the White Homing Pigeon Loft at San Diego Zoo children's Zoo.
