2002 STATE FAIR OPENS WITH PIGEONS
By Deone Roberts, AU Sport Development
Joining New Mexico's State Fair Parade proved to be an excellent
idea for Albuquerque Racing Pigeon Club member, Howard Hess.
Howard prepared his truck with release crates and banners to take
his place in the parade line. He even had help from children who
greeted people as they passed by them.
Birds were released during the entire parade route, starting at
the fairgrounds and heading through town.
Not only did the parade display draw attention, but Howard also
had an opportunity to open the State Fair with New Mexico's
Governor, Gary Johnson. The governor released a single homing
pigeon, which was then followed by a group release by fair
personnel.
Howard was able to spend time acquainting the governor with the
birds and their history.
The AU national office was pleased to generate press advisories to
area media outlets. One photojournalist followed alongside the
parade truck for an opportunity at a photo. A local newspaper
captured a picture of Governor Johnson conducting the opening
release.
Throughout the event, many people approached Howard seeking more
information about the sport. We are glad Howard was there to
provide it.
Great job Howard!

"Governor Gary Johnson releases the first bird."

"Fair personnel ready the birds for release."
